Moss Hill Methodist Church - the oldest unaltered building in Washington County,
The unpainted wood frame weathered to a silver-gray color was built during the Territorial days of Florida. A stagecoach route ran near the property. Made of roughhewn heart of pine, the horizontal siding and gable roof are supported by a brick pier foundation. Frontier construction was simple and durable. Heart of pine was used, the center of the pine tree. Once saturated with sap, upon aging it becomes strong and impervious to termites or water damage. The two doors were designed to have one entrance for women and girls and one for men and boys. According to information found on the Altha Methodist Church historical marker in Calhoun County the Moss Hill Methodist Church was built by Daniel Thomas Richards in 1857.
Old church once located in Vernon, Washington County, with Bama, Dorie, and Lucy, c. 1910.
